Who is AREBI?

AREBI is a forum for association, coaching, development of professionalism of real estate businesses and brokers engaged in the field of property rental intermediary services, as well as a vehicle for struggle, channeling aspirations and social communication between members and other agencies. The Indonesian Real Estate Broker Association (AREBI) is a professional organization whose members consist of legal entities.

Main Objective of AREBI

The primary goal of AREBI is to uphold honesty and provide professional services in the real estate industry. It emphasizes that all its members deliver marketing, sales, and rental services for properties in compliance with the Articles of Association, Bylaws, and the Professional Code of Ethics established by AREBI.

History of AREBI

During the 1980s, development activities by both the government and private sector continued to grow, resulting in increased investment in the real estate sector. This included housing, apartments, office buildings, commercial spaces, hotels, industrial areas, and more, with most projects executed by developers.

As the times progressed and Indonesia’s economy grew, the real estate industry expanded, requiring services closely related to real estate, such as appraisers, managers, consultants, insurers, educators, financiers, and real estate brokers.

Recognizing the increasing demands from the real estate sector and the growing need for quick, clear, and professional services, the need for property marketing information also intensified. However, at that time, there was no association representing real estate brokerage businesses in Indonesia, whereas similar associations were already well-established in other countries.

Motivated by this situation, Drs. Ferry Sonneville, then the Chairman of REI and FIABCI, invited several entrepreneurs from REI to take the initiative in forming a brokerage business association. The first meeting was held in 1989, followed by weekly meetings on Sungai Pawan Street in South Jakarta. Feedback and input for the establishment of the association came from various stakeholders and industry pioneers, including Ferry Sonneville, Frans Mardi, Santoso Sutrisno, Cynthia G. Sonneville, Ir. Sulistiyo Sidarto Mulyo, and Pinky Elka Pangestu. All agreed to establish the Indonesian Real Estate Brokers Association (AREBI).

AREBI was officially established by acclamation by its founders: Drs. Ferry Sonneville, Moh. S. Hidayat, Drs. Enggartiasto Lukita, Budiarsa Sastrawinata, Ir. Sulistiyo Sidarto Mulyo, Velly Theisa, Frans Mardi, Tommy Sunyoto, Inca W. Sianipar, and Cynthia G. Sonneville. They signed the Memorandum of Agreement on October 7, 1992. AREBI’s inauguration took place at Sahid Jaya Hotel on November 17, 1992, officiated by the Minister of Public Housing, Ir. Siswono Yudohusodo. During this event, the Provisional Executive Board of AREBI was formed, with Cynthia G. Sonneville appointed as Chairperson, supported by Frans Mardi and Tirta Setiawan, and assisted by REI officials Agusman Effendi as Secretary General and Bagir Mulachella as Treasurer.
